Redundancy and restructure

These are turbulent times with massive cuts in spending across local government threatening services, jobs and pay terms and conditions.

Aspect guidance

Aspect has produced a short guide for members and local representatives on responding to redundancies and restructuring in local government. You can download it here.

Consultation

It is especially important that Aspect representatives locally (supported by regional officials) engage with the consultation process.

If a redundancy is announced in your local authority, please ensure your regional official knows about it. You can contact them via info@aspect.org.uk or by calling 01226 383428.

You can find initial information about the employer’s consultation in the booklet, and in the FAQ.

Equality

You can find information about the equality issues a restructure or redundancy raises and the employer’s responsibility here.

Our response to protect services.

Our priority is to try to protect services and prevent compulsory redundancies. To help us protect services we encourage members to ask written questions, consider alternatives and draft a critique. Involving members with their considerable expertise is essential in doing this. An example of such a critique can be found here. An example of an alternative proposal can be downloaded here.

Pensions

For members considering taking redundancy, getting accurate pensions information is essential before agreeing to go. For LGPS members details are here whilst for TPS members, information can be found here. Either way it is essential you have a firm (and checked) figure before you take redundancy.

Getting organised

How seriously an employer takes aspect will depend on how well we make our case and how many members we have. We are growing nationally. Suggestions on how best to be organised in your local authority or employer can be found here.

Details of how to join can be found here.
