Whatever the tabloid press says, social work can transform people’s lives. It is demanding, albeit under-paid and under-valued work.

Funding pressures are making it even more complex and difficult. Staff are increasingly expected to ration care in unethical ways. Privatisation is a threat to staff and to services. Too often, when mistakes are made, the emphasis is on blame not learning from mistakes.

For the sake of social work staff, and for the sake of those who use social services, social workers need a union that speaks out, professionally, for staff facing enormous pressures on workloads, “remodelling”, and privatisation.

A union that knows how important it is that staff can speak out and raise concerns on behalf of, themselves and those who use services. Staff who look after themselves are better able to look after others.

Aspect is a small, but growing, and effective, union representing a range of professionals in education and social services. Our social work membership is small but growing.
