6 May 2009
Aspect, the children’s services union today welcomed the direction taken by the government’s in its response to Lord Laming’s children’s social work proposals.
The union’s general secretary John Chowcat said, “Measures to win back to this vital work experienced social workers who have left the profession, improved prospects for graduates, if matched by improved pay and conditions across the whole sector, can be a useful support for the measures recommended by Lord Laming.
“Reforms of the Integrated Children's System (ICS) along the lines of the recommendations of the Social Work Taskforce, if supported by an increased emphasis on a progressive social pedagogy and on wider professional discretion for practitioners, have the potential to further professionalise children’s services.
“Aspect is a strong advocate of a fully integrated and professionalised children’s services sector with staff recruitment and retention polices – including pay and service conditions that – reflect the high demands placed on these vital professionals.”
